What Australians care about

The May 2026 budget had one of the worst receptions on record: Newspoll found 47% thought it bad for the economy and 52% expected to be worse off. Even so, Resolve found the budget's capital gains tax and negative gearing changes had more support than opposition by August (35–21 and 35–20). Debt is a live worry: Resolve in September 2026 found 74% concerned about federal debt and 48% wanting the government to cut spending.
